Offensive Rookie of the Year Contender Odds

- Tua Tagovailoa +800
- Jerry Jeudy +1200
- D'Andre Swift +1200
2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Analysis
The Cincinnati Bengals nabbed QB Joe Burrow (+200) with the top overall pick, and he is the early favorite to come away with the hardware, too. But did he land in the best spot? Yes, the Bengals also snagged WR Tee Higgins (+3200) at the top of the second round to give Burrow a weapon, but the run game and offensive line play is going to have to be better, as Burrow won’t be able to step right into the black and blue AFC North and dominate like he did at LSU.
After Burrow, his Bayou Bengal teammate RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (+700) landed in a very favorable spot in Kansas City, and Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa (+800) was picked No. 5 overall. Edwards-Helaire was the first tailback off the board, and the bruising back also has tremendous hands. That should make him a factor from the jump for the defending Super Bowl champs, and QB Patrick Mahomes has the potential to make Edwards-Helaire a star.
As far as Tua, there are a lot of questions about his durability, which makes him a very risky pick. The potential is there for Tagovailoa to step up and be a star, but it is likely going to take some time. The Dolphins needn’t push him with veteran QB Ryan Fitzpatrick still on the roster and expected to start initially. As such, it could be tough to like Tua’s chances nearly as much as Edwards-Helaire at the same price.
While the selection of RB D’Andre Swift (+1200) by the Detroit Lions was praised, some pundits want to see the vast improvement by their offensive line before investing anything in him. RB Jonathan Taylor landed with the Indianapolis Colts, and that’s an intriguing pick. However, remember that RB Marlon Mack is still on the roster in Indy, and that’s an awfully big hurdle for Taylor. In addition, his fumbling issues and lack of soft hands to catch the ball make him a less attractive pick.
Perhaps the best intermediate play on the board comes in the form of Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb (+1500). He is an impressive specimen, and he lands in a very favorable situation with QB Dak Prescott, who can sling with the best of them. While WRs Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup are also in the receiver room with Lamb, the latter is expected to take over the slot spot previously occupied by WR Randall Cobb, now in Houston. The ceiling could be rather high for Lamb, who should see a heavy catch volume. His breakaway potential makes him worthy of a small-unit bet at a very favorable price.
And if you REALLY want to go for a longshot, Indianapolis Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr. (+4100) could fit the bill. He steps in to a situation for the Colts with just WR T.Y. Hilton and a bunch of other guys. If the rookie jells nicely with veteran signal caller QB Philip Rivers early in training camp and preseason, a starting job could easily be within his grasp. The Colts should air it out quite frequently, and that makes Pittman would a look.

2020 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Analysis
The Washington Redskins snapped up EDGE rusher Chase Young (+200) out of Ohio State with the No. 2 overall pick, and he has been touted as a generational prospect by some talking heads. He should step right in to harass the likes of Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, New York Giants QB Daniel Jones and Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz, who cannot be too pleased about the prospects of trying to elude him.
While Young is the heavy favorite to hoist the hardware, Arizona Cardinals LB Isaiah Simmons (+500) figures to have something to say about the battle. The standout at Clemson gives the Cardinals an immediate boost. He wrapped up his career in the upstate with 253 stops, including 28.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks. Simmons also had four picks, including a pick-six, while jarring the ball loose for five forced fumbles in 44 appearances. He is a disruptive force, and that’s just what the doctor ordered in Arizona. He is going to be fun to watch.
The defending champion LSU Tigers were heavily represented in this draft, and LB Patrick Queen (+900) lands in a favorable spot in Baltimore, while S Grant Delpit (+2300) figures to see a heavy workload immediately in Cleveland. The latter should rack up his fair share of tackles, and if he is able to stay healthy, he should show why he was previously thought of as a Day 1 player before an injury-marred 2019 campaign. A player entering with a chip on his shoulder is just the kind of person you want to target, especially at a nice value price like Delpit’s.
Young’s partner in crime at Ohio State, CB Jeffrey Okudah (+1400), went third overall and is a value play at this price. He should step right in for the departed Darius Slay and start from the get-go in the Motor City. Don’t expect this attractive price to stay this high for long.
The Carolina Panthers became the first team in the modern era to use all seven of their picks on defensive players, and former Auburn standout Derrick Brown (+2500) looks to be the new face of the Carolina defense following the retirement of fan favorite Luke Kuechly. Brown and former Penn State stud Yetur Gross-Matos (+3500) look to get off to a flying start in the Queen City. Each are worth a small-unit play just because they figure to start from Day 1.
If you’re looking for a real longshot to potentially pay off, look no further than Houston Texans DE Ross Blacklock (+6600). He figures to be one of the book ends with J.J. Watt, and the 290-pounder turned in an impressive 4.9 40-yard dash time at the NFL Scouting Combine.
The 40th overall pick should make head coach Bill O’Brien very happy on the defensive side of the ball. At the same price, Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Antoine Winfield Jr. (+5500) has those family bloodlines, and he should be an impact player for the contending Bucs. He’ll also have the luxury of learning from the best in practice, as future Hall of Famer Tom Brady gives him immediate on the job training.

Since 1957, AP sportswriters have been voting on the NFL Rookie of the Year award. However, in 1967, they began dividing it up into offensive ROY and defensive ROY.
This year, the race for the Offensive Rookie of the Year was a dramatic one. Although it’s almost a foregone conclusion as to who will win the award now that the 2020 season is about to end, there’s still plenty to discuss and debate.
Vegas Odds Nfl Offensive Rookie Of The Year
With one weekend left in the regular season, NFL betting sites have released their updated odds on this award. Let’s huddle to examine these odds and make an award winning prediction.
Previous Offensive ROY Winners
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year. The following is a list of the previous winners dating back to 2010:
- 2010 – Sam Bradford (QB) St. Louis Rams
- 2011 – Cam Newton (QB) Carolina Panthers
- 2012 – Robert Griffin III (QB) Washington Football Team
- 2013 – Eddie Lacy (RB) Green Bay Packers
- 2014 – Odell Beckham Jr. (WR) New York Giants
- 2015 – Todd Gurley (RB) St. Louis Rams
- 2016 – Dak Prescott (QB) Dallas Cowboys
- 2017 – Alvin Kamara (RB) New Orleans Saints
- 2018 – Saquon Barkley (RB) New York Giants
- 2019 – Kyler Murray (QB) Arizona Cardinals

Preseason Offensive ROY Odds and Joe Burrow
The following preseason Offensive Rookie of the Year betting odds were from FanDuel:
- Joe Burrow (+230)
- Clyde Edwards-Helaire (+360)
- Tua Tagovailoa (+800)
- Jonathan Taylor (+1000)
- Antonio Gibson (+1200)
- Ceedee Lamb (+1500)
- D’Andre Swift (+1500)
- Jerry Jeudy (+1500)
- Ke’Shawn Vaughn (+1500)
- Cam Akers (+2000)
- Denzel Mims (+2000)
- Henry Ruggs III (+2000)
- Jalen Reagor (+2000)
- Justin Herbert (+2000)
- Justin Jefferson (+2000)
As you can see, FanDuel along with other football betting sites had Joe Burrow listed as the odds on favorite to win this year’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
At the halfway mark of the season, it was clear that Burrow was the favorite to win this award. Sadly, his season was cut short by a devastating knee injury after 10 games.
Yet, he had impressive numbers through those 10 weeks: 2,688 yards, 13 TDs, 5 INTs, and a 65.3 completion percentage. Burrow was looking every bit the part of a franchise QB and not a rookie. He also had the Bengals competing each and every week.
I have no doubt that Burrow would’ve won this award if he didn’t get injured.
Other Players That Fizzled Out
Clyde Edwards-Helaire (+360) started off hot, but fizzled out in the second half of the season as the Kansas City Chiefs are a pass first team. Then he suffered an injury which certainly hurt his chances of getting back into the conversation.
Ceedee Lamb (+1500) was the benefactor of a fast start by the Cowboys on offense this season, but after Dak Prescott suffered a season ending injury, the entire offense suffered including Lamb’s chances of winning this award.
Running backs Antonio Gibson (+1200), D’Andre Swift (+1500), and Cam Akers (+2000) have all flashed potential as they’ve put together some impressive stretches this season. Unfortunately, their statistical success has fallen short of the totality by the three players listed below.
Offensive ROY Betting Odds
The following betting odds are courtesy of BetOnline:
Nfl Rookie Of The Year Winners
- Justin Herbert (-2000)
- Jonathan Taylor (+900)
- Justin Jefferson (+900)
Justin Herbert (-2000)
As a fan of Herbert, since his days at Oregon, it’s exciting to see how great he’s done in his rookie year. Since getting the start in Week 2, Herbert has exceeded all expectations coming into the 2020 season. As you can see above, he was a +2000 longshot to win this award.
Yet, despite being the backup at the start of the year, Herbert has showed that this league isn’t too big for him or that the speed of the game isn’t too fast for him.
In 14 games, Herbert has 4,034 passing yards which is 7th best in the league. He also has 28 TDs, 10 INTs, a 68.1 QBR, and a 66.3 completion percentage. These are numbers that make him a Top 10 QB and not a rookie.
If the Chargers had a better offensive line, a healthy Austin Ekeler all season, and a better defense this team would’ve definitely have a better record than 6-9 on the year and 5-9 with Herbert as a starter.
The Chargers are a season away from being a Playoff contender due to Herbert. With a good draft and a strong Free Agency, this team could be a force to be reckoned with next season.
Jonathan Taylor (+900)
Of the three realistic candidates for this award, running back Jonathan Taylor was the only one who lived up to the preseason expectations. He was listed at +1000 prior to the start of the season. And, at the end, he’s listed at +900.
Offensive Rookie Of The Year Nfl 2020
Coming out of Wisconsin, Taylor received some hype for going to the Colts as they had a solid offense which included a great offensive line. The rookie didn’t disappoint.

In 14 games this season, Taylor has rushed for 916 yards and 9 TDs. He has a 4.5 average yard per carry and also has 35 receptions for 298 yards and 1 TD.
Taylor will play in the final week of the 2020 season. I expect him to eclipse the 1,000 yard rushing mark and score at least one TD as the Colts should pummel the Jaguars.
Justin Jefferson (+900)
Justin Jefferson is trying to become the first receiver to win this award since ODB Jr. did it in 2014. He’s also trying to become the 9th WR to ever win this award.
Jefferson has had a stellar season as a rookie wideout. Like Odell Beckham Jr., Jefferson also played at LSU. However, I would argue that Jefferson’s rookie season is better than what ODB did in 2014.
Justin Jefferson is the first rookie WR with 1,200 yards and 7 Rec TD since Odell Beckham Jr. in 2014.
The only other rookies to do that in the last 60 years are Anquan Boldin (2003) and Randy Moss (1998), who also did it with the Vikings. pic.twitter.com/kdPnRs9HKu
— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) December 25, 2020
Beckham finished with 91 receptions for 1,305 yards, 12 TDs and a 14.3 ypc average.
With one game left, Jefferson has 79 receptions for 1,267 yards, 7 TDs, and 16.0 ypc average.
What makes Jefferson’s numbers so impressive is that he’s playing on a run first team and with an inconsistent QB.
If it weren’t for Herbert, Jefferson would be the clear cut frontrunner for this award.
Who Will Be the Offensive Rookie of the Year?
It’s pretty clear, but for those that aren’t sure, Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert will win this award. His numbers are fantastic for a rookie on a team filled with holes on the o-line and on the defense. Yet, he has given this team every chance to win games except for that Patriots blowout.

Herbert is a franchise QB and is going to make the Chargers into a Playoff contender as early as next year, provided that they have a solid offseason.

Although there’s no value with his odds, this is Herbert’s award even if he doesn’t play in Week 17.
